The Beatles On Record
Broadcast by BBC Four / The Beatles Week / 17 August 2009
It's a new documentary directed by Bob Smeaton, the man behind the fantastic Beatles Anthology series.
In The Beatles on Record the focus is on the process behind making the art that is the Beatles music. The documentary takes us from Please Please Me to the recording of the historic Abbey Road LP.
In keeping with the theme of creating art, we get a behind the scenes look at how the band matured as artists, songwriters and musicians. Dipping into the massive Beatles archive of audio, rare footage, photos and never-heard-before outtakes of studio chat from the Abbey Road recording sessions, The Beatles on Record is narrated entirely by John, Paul, Ringo, George and Sir George Martin.
Those who know something about the recording history of the group may not learn a lot of new information here but the presentation makes for enjoyable viewing nonetheless.
Besides, who could ask for better music?
